What is Fortified?

FORTIFIED™ is a voluntary construction and re-roofing standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) — a nonprofit research organization funded by the insurance industry. Unlike standard building codes that mainly focus on life safety, the FORTIFIED program aims to enhance overall resilience by adhering to FORTIFIED roofing standards.

Key features & benefits:

Grants of up to $6,000 to $10,000 are available (depending on your location) to help homeowners upgrade their roofs to meet FORTIFIED standards. In coastal counties and barrier islands, higher grant amounts (e.g., $10,000) may apply. Additionally, home insurance discounts or mitigation credits might be available for homes that fulfill the FORTIFIED standards.

Some insurers also provide a “FORTIFIED Endorsement.” After a covered loss, eligible policyholders can upgrade to a FORTIFIED roof and receive reimbursement up to a specified limit (e.g., $5,000) under certain policies. Each installation of FORTIFIED roofing is independently verified by an IBHS Certified contractor to ensure strict compliance with the established standards.
